Charon Set-Up
Some people ask me how do I check my proxies and what tool do I use, so I decided to write short tutorial about how to use Charon proxy checking tool.
First of all you need to download your fresh copy of Charon you can do that by visiting Rhino’s (Charon’s coder) site (http://project2025.com) now when you have your Charon copy on HDD you need to change some system settings stuff:
NOTICE - DO THIS ONLY IF YOU HAVE INSTALLED SP2 FOR WIN XP!!
You need to change your half-open connections limit which is default set at 10 connections, you can do that by using simple tool called TCP Patcher (you can download it from my site http://hansatan.com -> TOOLS section or from official site http://lvllord.de). When tool is on your HDD run it, you will be asked "Do you want to change half-open connections limit" push "Y" button on your keyboard which means "YES" after 5-6 seconds tool will prompt about WIN XP SP2 CD push cancel button and when tool will ask you "Do you want to keep modified filles" click on Accept button. When the process is done you can close tool, if everything went fine after second running of tool you should see window like this: CHECK SCREEN.
This action was necessary because 10 helf-open connections limit will bring you many timeouts during proxy test!
OK! Now we can finally run our copy of Charon 0.6 (tool will not be updated anymore because coder Rhino does not support it anymore! but it is not imporant because tool works perfectly and in my opinion it does not need update). After running you can see main window with buttons on the left such as load lists, options, scan etc., on the right you can see proxies board, all loaded proxies and their details will be shown in this tab, on the bottom you can see status bar. First of all we should load some proxy list. You can paste proxies from clipboard using CTRL+V or you can load whole list using button on the left panel. During loading of proxies they will be checked for duplicates it may take some time so be patient, when list is loaded you can see ip, hostname and port of your proxy and info if it has been already checked or not "Yes" info means it has not been tested yet, just like on this screen: CHECK SCREEN.
Now we need to configure our tool, first of all go to "General Options" you need to check couple options here first if you have dynamic IP then you should check option called "Check IP before starting the test" , you should also check "Check validity of proxyjudge before test" so you will be up do date with your PJ’s, remember also to check "Resolve proxies to IP upon loading" and "Save proxy list on exit" so you will not loose your proxies. When everyting is done you can close window by clicking "OK" button. Everything should look like on this screen: CHECK SCREEN.
You can skip "Scan Options" tab because everyting is set-upped right there.
Go to "Connect Options" now. On the top you can see your IP pool, it will be filled during first proxy scan, now check option "Use External Judge(s)". Now you need to set how many Threads you want to use, for example I use 30 threads but everything depends on your wish and your internet connection speed. Now you need to set Timeout it is very important, for example if you want to determinate fast proxies you can set your timeout to 10-15 seconds if you do not need so fast proxies you can set timeout to 30 remember less timeout = less proxies, now set "Retry timeouts / dead" to 1. You can also check "Scroll Display Window" if you want but it will take much more of CPU usage during test. Now check "Check proxies for HTTP" and "Resolve proxies to hostnames" and that is all because I assume that you do not want to check Country of proxies and proxies for socks. Settings I told you is best and fastest! Everyting should look like on this screen: CHECK SCREEN.
In "Filter Options" tab you can determinate what filter files you want to use, default filter files set by Rhino works fine and remove most of dangerous proxies/proxy ranges just like Planetlab, Codeen. Of course you can make your own proxy filter lists with your own ranges etc. it is usefull because some proxy ranges are always dead and checking them just waste your time, but this tutorial will not show how to do that.
In "Site Options" tab you can set to set to check your proxies against specific site for example lets say that you want to crack http://clubsandy.com then you need to put ClubSandy members’ area URL (http://clubsandy.com/preview/login) and their members’ area URL page title. Charon will check all anon proxies for this site respond. But for default do not use this option, anyway good setted up should look like this: CHECK SCREEN.
In "Judge Options" tab you need to specify what kind of Proxy Judges you want to use. Proxy Judges are scripts via which you your proxies will be tested for gateway/anonimity etc. abilities. Rhino already putted some PJ’s in tool but you need to check them to do that simply push "Test judges" button. There is couple types of PJ’s most common are Azenv 1.04 and CGI 2.34 I recommend to use Azenv’s because they are written in PHP and works faster. You can move good PJ’s to "Judge selected to use" by clicking right mouse button on good PJ and pushing "Move judge(s) to selected list". I suggest to use 1-2 good PJ’s with Ping like 150. Personally I use 5 PJ’s because it will let you to take overload from server where PJ is set and less timeouts will occure.
OK. Now when your proxy list is loaded and settings are fine you can check your list to do that push "Check Proxies" button and choose "Check anonimity of all proxies". Of course you can set few proxies to check if you do not want to check whole list it depends on you. While test is running on the bottom of Charon window you can see status bar which shows your graphicly progress, number of anon, non anon, timeouted proxies etc. If proxy is working tool will show its’ ping and speed, if proxy is anon tool will show you it’s anonimity score and if it is gateway or not. Gateways are fine you can use them! Do not be scared if after checking of 2000-3000 proxies list only 150-300 will be anon and working! It is normal these times… You can check this screen to compare settings: CHECK SCREEN.
When the test is done we need to filter out timeouted and non anon proxies. To do that simply click on "Filter List" button and choose "Delete Non-Anon" and "Filter dodgy / duplicates / gateways". Now you can save your list and use it!
